Jigsaw Puzzles: Putting the Pieces Together

May 02, 2017

A favorite family night when the kids were young consisted of "lickies & chewies" (Mom's Snack Choices) and working on a jigsaw puzzle. We always needed the picture on the front of the box to help get started. And then, the edges were the first pieces we put in place.

That's kind of like a financial plan does for your life. It helps to start with a picture of what you want it to look like when finished. What kind of activities will you enjoy. Where will you live? Where would you like to travel? RV cross-country or Mountain Cabin? Once the vision is in place, we can begin to lay in some of the edges to frame the picture. What kinds of things will you want once you are financially independent - I use that word instead of retirement.

When the picture of your financial future is complete, what will it take to bring it to life in dollars and cents. Working backwards, we can make some assumptions about rates of return, earnings, and savings to see if you are on track for your picture.

There are several options if you are not on track. You can work longer, paint a smaller picture, or devote more current dollars towards your future picture. Regardless of how it ends up, wouldn't it be better to see the future while there is still time to change it? It is a beautiful thing when your financial picture is complete and you are confident for the future.

At Community Risk Advisors, we work as financial planners and wealth managers to help our clients create their picture of the future while making sure today remains rock solid should something happen. We integrate planning, protecting, saving and growing into a single plan. It takes all the pieces to finish the puzzle.
